How do you buy a gun in Illinois?
Buying a firearm in Illinois can be a complicated and confusing task.
But we can help you navigate through all the license applications, forms, and legal requirements right here in our well stocked and friendly gun store. We can walk you through the purchase process step by step, and answer any questions you might have.
FIRST: you need to be an ILLINOIS resident over 21 to buy a handgun.
If you are over 18 and an Illinois or bordering state resident from Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, or Indiana you CAN buy a long gun though. All other out of state residents must transfer through an FFL dealer.
SECOND: you need to have a valid FOID card if you live in Illinois.
FOID stands for Firearm Owner's ID and can be applied for on the ISPFSB website, or you can use our in-store kiosk and apply for your FOID card right here in the store. Typically you receive your new FOID card in the mail in 4-6 weeks.
THIRD: you need to have a valid state ID or Driver's License.
And at least one form of your ID's (FOID, IL CCL, State ID, or Driver's License) needs to have your CURRENT address. Non US Citizens must also have your permanent resident card with you. If you do not have an ID with your current address on it we do accept supplemental documentation such as your vehicle registration, W2 form, or any other government issued document with your current address on it.
Paperwork/Payment:
- Federal Form 4473 is required to be filled out by anyone that is purchasing, or transferring, a firearm in the US. This form must be filled out on premises and will be given to you by a staff member.
- We require a $250 minimum deposit on all firearm purchases. ALL cancelled sales will incur a $250 re-stocking fee.
- Special orders are required to be paid in full at the time of order.
- We offer a 3% discount off the cost of the firearm for purchases made with cash.
- Paperwork and payment takes approximately 10 minutes.
Waiting Period:
- The State of Illinois requires a 72 hour waiting period for ALL firearm purchases. We start this waiting period when we submit your background check to the state after you fill out your paperwork. Meaning, you will need to come back 3-29 days later to pick up your new gun because background checks expire after 30 days.
Warranty:
- Maxon Shooter's Supplies offers a lifetime non-transferable warranty on ANY new gun purchased in-store for a flat fee of $45.
Perks of Purchasing at Maxon:
- Every gun purchased here comes with a complimentary range pass that is good for 1 free hour of range time. This free range pass NEVER expires.
- We also offer 10% off up to $100 of accessories and ammunition with any gun purchase both at the time of the sale, and at pick up.
Other Important Info:
- We will NOT process sales that we suspect are straw purchases.
- Once a gun has been transferred to its new owner that gun is considered USED (per ATF regulations) and cannot be returned for a full refund.
